The Patriot Act An Integral Part of the Fight Against...

The Patriot act also improves communication between intel ligence agencies and law enforcement, making it easier for them to share information (Fisher). Before the Patriot Act, communication between law enforcement and intelligence agencies was limited because of restrictions in information sharing (Ashcroft). Law enforcement and intelligence agencies need to communicate because they both have vital information regarding terrorist plots, and without each other’s information, neither can accomplish the goal of stopping the attack and arresting the terrorists. Opponents of the act often say that it allows for searches without notifying the owner and requests for information based solely on it being relevant to the investigation, both of which are against the rights given by the fourth amendment (Stern). However, law enforcement agencies have not used the powers given to them in the intent to take away people’s liberties. In 2002, Attorney General John Ashcroft stated that the Department of Justice’s goal since the Septem ber 11th attacks was to prevent future attacks against the United States (Fisher).
